Large Korniche Rooflight Replacement in Norwich

We recently replaced a large, dated rooflight at a property in Norwich with a bespoke Korniche glass system measuring 5120mm x 2644mm.

At more than five metres long, this was a substantial rooflight and quite different from a standard installation. The existing unit covered a large section of the flat roof, so the replacement needed to be made specifically for the opening and carefully worked into the surrounding roofing.

We removed the old rooflight before installing the new Korniche system. Because an off-the-shelf unit wasn’t suitable for an opening of this size, the replacement was manufactured to the exact dimensions required.

The new rooflight uses toughened blue glass and includes an electrically operated opening vent. We also installed new switchgear, giving the customer an easy way to open the vent and introduce fresh air into the room below.

The difference in appearance is quite striking. The old rooflight was much heavier in its design, whereas the slimmer framework and larger areas of glass give the roof a cleaner, more modern finish. From inside, the new glazing also allows plenty of natural light into the room below.

With a rooflight of this size, fitting the glass is only part of the job. We also had to make sure the new system was properly weathered into the existing flat roof. The detailing around the rooflight is just as important as the unit itself, as the glazing and surrounding waterproofing need to work together.

The size of the rooflight made the installation more involved than a typical replacement, but it shows what can be achieved when an older system no longer suits the property.

You don’t necessarily have to replace an existing rooflight with another version of the same design. Bespoke systems can be manufactured for much larger openings and can include features such as opening sections and electric ventilation, depending on what suits the property.

For this project, we were able to replace the original installation with a much cleaner-looking glass rooflight while keeping the existing opening and flat roof. The result is a more contemporary roofline, better control over ventilation and a much brighter feel inside the room.
