Felt Shingle Roof Refurbishment - Timber Sun Room, Kenninghall

We recently refurbished the roof of a timber sun room in Kenninghall, near Thetford, replacing the existing covering with a new red felt shingle system.

The first stage was to remove the old roof covering. This exposed the structure beneath and allowed us to inspect it properly before preparing the roof for the new installation.

We then fitted felt shingles across the pitched and hipped roof. Their relatively light construction makes them well suited to timber garden buildings, while the individual shingle pattern gives a more decorative finish than a plain sheet covering.

The colour was also an important part of the finished appearance. The red shingles work well with the natural timber walls and doors, refreshing the sun room without changing its traditional character. Careful detailing around the hips and edges completed the roof and gave the whole installation a neat, consistent finish.

Although smaller than many of the domestic and commercial projects we undertake, the same principles still apply. A sun room roof needs to keep the structure beneath dry and withstand regular exposure to rain, wind, sunlight, frost and changing temperatures. Replacing a deteriorating covering before water begins affecting the timber can also help avoid more extensive repairs later on.

The completed refurbishment has given the sun room a new weatherproof covering while retaining the appearance that suits the building.
