A New Roof with Traditional Charm in Great Plumstead
16/05/2025
We recently finished a full roof replacement on a lovely property in Great Plumstead, just outside Norwich. The existing tile roof had seen better days, so the homeowners got in touch for some advice - and a fresh start.
This was one of those projects where every detail mattered. The owners wanted a roof that would last, perform well, and suit the style of their home. We helped them choose materials that ticked all three boxes, blending traditional clay tiles with modern insulation and expertly crafted leadwork on the flat roof areas.
Classic Clay Tiles, Made to Last
Once we’d stripped off the old tiles, we installed new Sandtoft Humber plain clay tiles in a rich Tuscan finish. It’s a colour that really suits rural Norfolk homes - warm, natural, and full of character. For the hips, we used matching clay bonnet tiles to give the roof a clean, traditional finish.
These tiles aren’t just for show. Clay is one of the most reliable roofing materials out there - incredibly durable and weather resistant. Done right, it’s the roof you fit once and forget about for decades.
Better Insulation, Without Compromise
Underneath the tiles, we fitted YBS BreatherQuilt - a quilted breather membrane that combines insulation with moisture control. It helps to reduce heat loss through the roof while still allowing the structure to breathe, which is important for the long-term health of the property.
It’s especially useful on pitched roofs where space is tight or internal disruption needs to be kept to a minimum.
Flat Roofs, Finished in Traditional Lead
As part of the job, we also replaced several flat roof sections, including the supporting timber work. We then installed new coverings in code 6 lead, all shaped and fitted by hand by our skilled team.
Leadwork is a bit of a craft in itself, and it’s something we take great pride in. When it’s installed properly, it’s not only built to last - it looks fantastic too, especially on older or character homes like this one.
A Roof That Looks the Part - and Performs Brilliantly
This project was a great example of the kind of work we love doing - combining solid craftsmanship with carefully chosen materials that suit the style of the property. And because all the work was carried out by our own team (no subcontractors here), we were able to make sure every detail was just right.
If you’re thinking about a new roof - whether it’s a complete replacement or repair - we’d be happy to take a look and talk through your options. We’ve been working on homes across Norfolk since 1986, and we still approach every job with the same care and pride we always have.
